VCUarts Student Project

Committed to championing the young designers of the future, Liberty continues to support emerging creatives in their most recent student project with Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), Doha.

Inspired by decorative prints and harmonious colour palettes, Liberty Fabrics’ Floral Library collection reimagines a series of classic artworks from Liberty’s renowned 60,000-strong archive. With this fabric series, Liberty Fabrics tasked VCUarts Qatar with the challenge of creating their own collection of abayas.

An abaya is a traditional, full-length outer garment worn by many women in the Middle East, symbolising modesty and elegance. This project invited students and designers to reinterpret this traditional garment by pushing the boundaries of fashion and textile design while simultaneously honouring the cultural significance of the abaya.

The VCUarts series of abayas will be displayed at the Liberty Regent Street flagship on the fourth floor and at the prestigious Doha Design District, a focal point for creativity and innovation in design. This hub serves as a perfect backdrop to showcase this unique fusion of traditional Middle Eastern attire with contemporary textile design.
